On the evening of 23 June, every village in the Pyrénées-Orientales celebrates the summer solstice. As night falls, a bonfire is lit, followed by dancing the sardana and enjoying barbecued food, pastries and sweet wine. People also exchange St John’s Day bouquets, said to bring good luck for the coming year, before throwing the previous year’s bouquet into the fire.
